No shock to anyone it was declared a total loss yesterday.
Getting a nice payout for it though which means we’re off and car shopping for another SUV.
Wife wants 3 rows so that crosses off any modern Jeeps. Her front runners are a 2011 Yukon Denali I saw, 2015/16 Ford Explorers and similar year Dodge Durangos.
She really likes the Denali. If we get it I might have to make some exhaust modifications to let that 6.2L big boy do some singing.

I’d go with the Ferd. Newer is better for a DD and better on Gas.

Don’t go near Dodge. Seriously. Don’t. They’ve gotten worse, not better.
Yukon Denalis are ... well... if you thought the gas mileage in the Jeep was bad? Prepare for a new level of pain.
Ford, I don’t know enough about to have an informed opinion.

I’d go with the Denali myself.

the 3rd row in the Explorer is very tight, which is something you two will definitely want to evaluate if you intend to carry anything living back there.
What about the Flex? longer wheelbase so 3rd row room is better. plus, if you have the 2nd row bench then the seats all fold forward and form a flat load floor.

Well, glad your wife is okay - that’s the important thing. Still sucks though.
I’d go with the Yukon - D E N A L I means “luxury”.
Also, I tend not to care as much as I probably should about gas mileage...

The Flex is a surprisingly good choice, believe it or not. Actually usable third row. It’s almost like a modern Windstar if a Windstar was heavily overpriced and made to look like a toaster.

And here is a photo of somethign all SUV owners do. Chaining down your 7 passenger SUV to do a massive 4 wheel burnout, what a lovely way for you, your wife, and your 5 kids to spend a Sunday afternoon.

I thought that was standard RAM with a hemi behaviour.
Either that or dodge made a gas pedal that is either 100% gas or 0%.

I second the flex, my old boss had one and he was a big chevy guy, had an awesome stroker 2 door tahoe, but they got rid of a suburban for the flex for the MPGs and ended up loving it except for the ground clearance (they lived in the boonies and regularly saw feet of snow)

I love the Flex and prefer it to the Explorer giving the Jeep experience her response when ever I propose a vehicle is “can I lift it?” and “how big of A/T’s can we put on it?”
The Explorer doesn’t accept lifts well. Durango does quite well, tahoe/suburban/yukons don’t really need it.

lol, the Jeep was lifted with oversize tires and an underpowered engine. That V6 got about 16 on the highway because it was always working it’s ass off, the Denali is an upgrade.
Oh, and the Durango is fine, it hasn’t been updated since 2011 pretty much so it hasn’t fallen down as much as others. Also it’ll probably be a Pentastar V6 which is a decent motor.

lol the Durangos are pretty solid, our price range leads us to the pentastar V6 which is fine.
Sure as hell better than the above pictures Land Rover.

not interested in a Subaru - but even if I was it’s above budget because it’s brand new.

Denali is a nice solid ride, I’d prefer the Durango for looks but it’s her call and I’m sure she’ll like the higher ride height of the Denali.

If it’s used just for her work commute (typical) she does less than 6,000 miles a year. and the Jeep used to get about 16 on the highway thanks to a V6 that was underpowered and always working it’s ass off pushing a lifted Commander with oversize tires.
Denali will be an MPG upgrade.

Dude, I reiterate: if you thought the gas mileage on the Jeep was bad? Denali is worse.
The Yukon Denalis I am looking at are specifically set up for highway towing. They get less than 8MPG typical.. Newer ones that tow far less don’t fare much better real world. I don’t care what their EPA sticker says. Real world . My GMC guy actually steered me away from several because the GMT900 family is just miserable unless you have the 6.2 L94. At which point the gas mileage goes from a claimed 15/21 to a claimed 14/18 with a typical of 12 or below . (The 6.0 I was told avoid at all costs.)
Same deal with early GMT-K2XX platform (new generation.) The Denali gets the 8L90, early versions of which are troublesome to say the least. First year 5.3 EcoTec3's are also problematic. You’d have to go 2017+ on those if you don’t your wallet bled dry.

just seeing all this now - glad everyone’s ok after the Jeep got totalled!!
fwiw if she’s
leaning GM, the Buick Enclave also
has 3 rows and is
easier on the gas. not sure if it’s a factor for her
but having
driven both
a Yukon Denali XL and an Enclave
for a while I definitely preferred parking and other daily driver activities in the Enclave.

Yeah a used FCA product is generally better than new - the bugs are all sorted. We have two Pentastars, they’ve treated us well so far.

Thanks! Yeah, glad she’s fine and that the kids weren’t in the Jeep with her!
I pointed out a Yukon XL in a parking lot with it’s butt sticking out of a parking spot the other day and was like - this is your future lol.
I love the Enclave, it’s just not “truck enough” for her. I’m going to try and push her towards a short wheelbase Yukon instead of an XL at least.
At the end of the day she’d take a 4 door Wrangler over all of these options, but she sees the practicality of a 3rd row giving the kids, and if we’re going to have 1 big vehicle and 1 sedan we might as well go all in for a 3rd row this time (Our Commander was a 2 row).
Hope you guys are doing well, we haven’t talked in ages!

You seem very knowledgeable about GM’s but I think you’re missing a bit of information on the shitty 3.7 we’ve been dealing with. Here’s the user generated MPGs from fueleconomy.gov. It’s not going to be much wor se. I’m sure the type of Commander owner to upload their personal MPG to fueleconomy.gov isn’t the kind to lift it and go up 2 sizes in tires and the majority of them were getting 15.5, ours was normally around high 13's or low 14's, partly because you have to floor the thing to get it to move.
So like I said, the gas mileage isn’t much worse. I’m not saying it’s an improvement, just that it’s not “you’re going to be broke” levels of bad in comparison.
